Busy Mommy & Me!

I know excuses, excuses...my Mommy has been busy & has something she would like to 'announce' later this week. Also it seems my Mommy can't go to sleep, she has been awake now for over 44 hours. No naps, no dosing, her body is ready for bed but she can't get her brain to turn off. Does anyone know why this would happen?
Anyway! Back to me! I've been learning how to walk off leash. You see I am a year & a half old, and all I know is leash. Mommy should have taught me off leash as a puppy but she just didn't know! We met a dog that walks off leash & his name is Butler. Butler & his Daddy look so happy when they walk together. Nothing holding Butler from running away from his Daddy except for his love & respect for him! Mommy looks at how we walk. While I know not to pull, & all that fancy stuff she wants me to be a part of the walk & not on it. This is going to be hard work, Mommy knows what to do if I run, Butler's Daddy gave her a full rundown of how to train me. I got to resist the urge to sniff! Does anyone else walk off leash? Have any tips for a learner(& trainer, BOL!)?

Eduardo, I love your new background! My mommy lets me off leash when we're at the park sometimes but never on the road...my nose would get the better of me and i would run in the middle of the street! She hasn't really trained me though. I'm sorry your mommy hasn't been able to sleep. :-( She should try some sleepytime tea.

Sniffs and licks,

Chase

Hi Eduardo
I'm allowed to walk off my leash but my brother and sister arn't unless there are no other dogs around. I am just furry well behaved and have a different temperemant to my brother and sister, so i don't have any tips. My Mummy gets like that sometimes. Especially when she thinks a lot. Warm milk and a hot bath help mummy relax and she used to meditate a while ago as well.
Big licks to you

Eduardo - I don't let me doggies off leash, because I KNOW that they would run!. The are quite old now, and you know what they say about teaching an old dog new tricks. I'm sure that you will do just fine!

I hope that I'm not the cause of your mom not being able to sleep! If I am, you tell her to email me, so that I can try to get her to GO TO BED!!! Heck - just go ahead and tell her to GO TO BED!

Talk to you later!

Maybe your mommy needs to be a professional doggie trainer. She does such wonderful work with you.

We are in awe of the idea of walking off leash. Muzzer bows in admiration

keep us posted.

Hey Eduardo, first our servants are a doctor and a nurse and they are all over the fact that your human better get to her doctor. A body and a brain HAVE to have periods of sleep to function and they are really serious about that.

And, the servant says no off lead walks for us EVER unless we're in a secure area. The risks (getting lost, dog vs. car, some other human thinking they'd like to snag us) just aren't worth it.

dude, my humans would NEVER let me off leash. if i even got a whiff of a rabbit i would be out tracking and never come back.

good luck with your training and i think mommy should do some yoga, take a hot bubble bath and read the phone book.

i think her brain is playing a trick on her. with the stress of job searching, i think she triggered the flight or fight response. she has to tell herself she is safe and all is well.

hi Eduardo, i am sorry to hear that your mom is not getting to sleep. my mom has a lot of trouble sleeping when she is stressed out or when she's had some trouble and she cant stop thinking of it (mostly trouble at work). this week she started drinking a hot infusion and taking a bath right before bed. it helped but then she wakes up at 3, 4 or 5, so she doesnt get enough hours of sleep.
mom lets me off leash in certain places where cars ar far away, or at home, there barely are any cars on the street and she is constantly talking to me and watching me. but remember, since i cant see, i am not used to running away. in your case, you need to be very careful because you are part beagle and beagles have a powerful nose!

Happy training and we love your new wallpaper.

Daddy lets me walk off leash at the park [i don't always stay next to daddy tho] - Mommy is too scared to let me off - so she bought me a 60' leash so that I have freedome and she has control! Mommy tells Daddy that he better not let me off leash because the police in Oak Ridge will give him a fine. I went to obedience school to learn to wlak off leash [I got a diploma and everything] but the truth is I didn't do very well...but I got the diploma anyway. It's not that I'm "bad" I'm just inquisitive.

PS your new background is very pretty Eduardo

Gotta go chew something...

Oh Eduardo, it's great to walk off-leash! We three do it everyday & we never run off! We walk on the grassy land area ofcourse but on the streets, we still use leashes just in case. Our hoomans still don't trust us 100%. We're dogs. Whenever we see cats, we can't help it but we listen to Mommy. If she says no & stay put, we do it. But we only listen to her not to our Hooman M. Hehehe! Ofcourse before starting to walk off-leash, everything has to be done on-leash first & the 1st command you'll need to learn is heel. It'll take a while before you get the idea of it. During heeling exercise, you're not allowed to walk off, wander around or simply sniff stuff without your hooman giving you permission to do so. Heeling means, stay by your hooman's side the while time & sit when your hooman is talking to somebody & stops walking. Now, there's a difference between learning commands for OB competition level & learning OB commands like heeling for home purposes. So tell your Mom to make it as a fun exercise. Ofcourse even after you learn how to heel properly on leash inside & outside of your house, it doesn't mean you can go off-leash straight away just like that. You only got the idea of heeling on-leash but without the leash, it's a whole new different thing! It's just like learning sit for example. When your hooman stands in front of you & asks you to sit, you sit. But when she stands on your left or your right side & asks you to sit, you are confused because it's all different. It'll be best if your Mom uses a fishing line during off-leash training because it's see-though & super light so you can't feel the weight of it & you think you're totally off-leash when actually you're not. That's how we started off in learning heeling off-leash. Be sure to do lots of it outdoors where there are 100 over distractions from people walking by, dogs, cats, birds, vehicles going by, hawkers making hotdogs & so on. The training may take some time but your Mom must be consistent & do it everyday. Be sure there are lots of praise & rewards!

Watch out for the beagle half of the nose--it will send you running after any interesting smell. My mom takes melatonin to sleep at night and extra vitamin D (dr's orders) and it's made a big difference. We can't wait for the announcement!

Mom doesn't trust me off a leash, and I can't really say I blame her. But after little Miss Perfect's jaunt yesterday, I don't think Lucky will ever be off the leash either.

I am only allowed off leash in dog shcool, because that is the only place I behave off leash. Even though Mommy is a trainer, most people don't know that I take over the training of Mommy!

Hey Eduardo! Zeke and I are never off leash unless we're at the dog park. Even if there wasn't a leash law, we might run into the road and get hit by a car. But maybe it would work if you live in a more rural area.

See ya!

Being a city dog, running off leash is a big no-no for me. If I'd see a squirrel or a bird or another dog, off I'd go. I've even run onto the road onleash. I can only be off-leash at an enclosed park - that's it.

In the back yard I have a long tie so I can run around, but I end up getting all tangled so it's no fun.

No amount of training is going to make my parents trust me to walk off-leash. Never.

Tell your mom to relax her jaw by putting the tip of her tongue on the roof of her mouth. When the jaw's relaxed, sleep comes more easily. Deep breathing helps too.

WHAT?!! 44 hours without sleep??!! Gosh.. is your mommy stressed out about something or is something bothering her? Maybe you can get her to burn some lavender oil.. our mom does that sometimes and it is supposed to make you relaxed (and fall asleep).
Our mom and dad would never allow Hershey to walk off leash.. me maybe cos I am too old and contented to run away. But Hershey is one fireball... and after the incident where she dashed across the road, I don't think she'd ever be leash-free!!

Hi Eduardo,
I hope your mommy can get some sleep soon, and that your off-leash training goes well. I am only allowed off-leash in a big area where there is no danger of me getting run over. Even then it makes my mom nervous! I like to chase runners and bikers too, so I mostly have to stay on-leash!
My blog is gone now, but I will be back soon, and I will let you know where to find me.

Hi Eduardo! Good luck with walking off a leash! My mommy wishes she trained me as a pup, but now she says it's too late for me....I have way too much beagle in me and I'd run off never to be heard from again! Let me know how it goes!

Oh and I can't wait to hear your mommy's "announcement" later this week!!
